To Infinity and beyond

STOCKTON'S Infinity Bridge has won Project of the Year for its constructors Balfour Beatty at the fifth annual Constructing Excellence North East Awards on Friday May 8.

But the footbridge’s impressive design was the least of its merits as far as the judges were concerned. They were looking for evidence of best construction practice across the board.

Balfour Beatty was one of 12 winners in the 11 categories celebrating excellence and the achievements of organisations across the North East’s built environment. The winners will represent the North East in the national finals.

Constructing Excellence’s chief executive Catriona Lingwood said: "Despite the challenges constructors are facing in the economic downturn, the standard of entries was extremely high reflecting the excellent and innovative work taking place in the region.

"We also had more entries than ever this year – more than 90 – and I would like to thank everyone who entered.

There is a direct link between quantity and quality as far as awards are concerned. The North East is renowned for its passionate people who exhibit an enormous amount of pride in all that they do and this has certainly been evident in the submissions for this year’s awards."
