New landmarks take their place

THE developers of the North East’s top office buildings are being sought to enter The Journal’s prestigious Landmark Awards.

Our judging panel always has a tough task to choose the winner of this category with so many high-profile buildings springing up in the region each year.

In 2007, the building that triumphed was the Fire Control Centre at Belmont in County Durham, with Cobalt 13 B&C in North Tyneside and the Archers Law building in Stockton close behind.

The Landmark Awards are organised in partnership with Newcastle law firm Watson Burton LLP to recognise the top performers in the region’s construction and development industry.

The awards, also supported by Allied Irish Bank (GB), were introduced to highlight regional building excellence and reward developments which highlight the best in concept, design and construction.

The office category will be awarded to an office development from the North East which demonstrates effective planning, construction and design.

The development will reflect practicality, accessibility and will also include elements of originality and design. Business and science parks will also be eligible for this category.

The other awards are for retail and leisure facilities, environment, residential and the Judge’s Gem Award, as well as the overall North East Landmark of the Year Award.

The judges are Richard Freeman-Wallace of Watson Burton, Chris Dixon of Allied Irish Bank (GB), Jeff Alexander of Surgo Construction, John Burns of Mackellar Architecture, Rita Callender of the Environment Practice, Simon Murray of the Construction Industry Training Board and Phil Young of Esh Group.

Mr Freeman Wallace said: “What pleases me most about the Landmark Awards is that they shine a light on people who usually have a much lower profile, but who richly deserve recognition.”

Entry is open to developments in The Journal and Middlesbrough Evening Gazette circulation areas completed between August 16, 2007, and August 16, 2008.
