Judges to seek out gems

THE people behind the greenest buildings in the North are being sought to put themselves and their developments forward for The Journal’s Landmark Awards.

With carbon footprints and energy prices fast rising on the development agenda, the environmental award looks set to be ever more hotly – or hopefully coolly – contested.

Last year, the building that took home the Environmental Award was The Wynd at Amble, developed by Rivergreen.

Runners-up were Northumbria University’s City Campus East in Newcastle and Highfield Community Primary School in Sunderland.

The Landmark Awards are organised in partnership with Newcastle law firm Watson Burton to recognise the top performers in the region’s construction and development industry.

The awards, also supported by Allied Irish Bank (GB), were introduced to highlight regional building excellence and reward developments which highlight the best in concept, design and construction.

The environmental category will recognise a project or building that demonstrates a particular contribution to environmental or conservation issues. It will demonstrate sustainability and environmental awareness in its concept and implementation.

Other awards are for retail and leisure, offices, homes and the Judge’s Gem Award, as well as the overall North East Landmark of the Year.

The judges are Richard Freeman-Wallace, of Watson Burton; Chris Dixon, of Allied Irish Bank (GB); Jeff Alexander, of Surgo Construction; John Burns, of Mackellar Architecture; Rita Callender, of the Environment Practice; Simon Murray, of the Construction Industry Training Board and Phil Young, of Esh Group.

Entry is open to developments in The Journal and Middlesbrough Evening Gazette circulation areas completed between August 16, 2007, and August 16, 2008.
