What will take title this year?

ALL that is best in the world of residential development is being sought by the judges of the Landmark Awards this week.

With some impressive winners in recent years, the residential category of the awards is likely to be hotly contested again.

Last year the towering Echo 24 apartment building next to the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland took home the prize, with Mario Minchella Architects rewarded alongside Tolent Construction and developer Echo Buildings.

The Landmark Awards, presented in partnership with Newcastle law firm Watson Burton, recognise and reward the high fliers of the region’s building industry.

The judges of the residential award are looking for developments which have improved their local area. The schemes must be fully complete within the entry period in order to qualify.

Aside from improving the local area, the judges will also look at the overall concept, design and distinctiveness of the projects. The judges will also look at innovation, sustainability and what makes the development unique.

Chris Dixon of Allied Irish Bank (GB), the second sponsor of the Landmark Awards, said: “The quality and range of homes being developed in the North East today should make this category quite a tough one to judge.

“Previous years have seen the awards highlight some truly excellent schemes including Sunderland’s Echo 24 last year, Manor Chare in Trinity Gardens in 2006, and the Old Post Office in Sunderland back in 2005.

“I look forward to visiting this year’s nominees and putting the teams behind them in the spotlight.”

For each of the six Landmark categories, the panel will select one winner, with the architect, developer and contractor for the winning project each receiving an award. As well as the residential prize, there are awards for retail and leisure, office development, environmental, public sector, and the judges’ gem for smaller schemes. The overall North East Landmark of the Year Award will go to one of the six category winners.

Landmark will culminate in a black-tie event at the Newcastle Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park, on Thursday, October 16. Last year’ event attracted more than 300 members of the region’s property sector.
