Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 1,242 head at their annual show and sale of Mule and Suf folk cross gimmers at Scots Gap Auction Mart which was kindly sponsored by Barclays Business Banking.

Prior to the sale, the judge Mr Richard Thornton, Cornhills, Kirkwhelpington, awarded the Joe Arthur Memorial Cup for the champion pen to Mr James Herdman, Edlingham Newtown, Alnwick, with an excellent pen which went on to make £118 and were purchased by the judge.

The reserve champion pen went to Mrs V M Armstrong, Carrick, Elsdon, which went on to make £112 and were purchased by Robert Stevenson, Bal lantrae, South Ayrshire.

John Swan Limited sold 1,354 lambs at there weekly sale of primestock. Lambs sold to 111p/kg for a 41kg Texel lamb from Reedsford and to £52.20 for a pen of 48kg from Lowick Moor House.

Lambs easier on the week due to a fall in National Trade.

Store lambs

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 3,557 store lambs at their weekly sale.

A good show and plenty of buyers present saw all classes again in strong de mand. Top £42.50 for Texel x lambs from Glendearg, £41.80 Girnwood. Charol lais £37, £36.50 Quarryfield, £35.50 EastForeshield. Suffolks £38.50 Hightown, £37.50 Quarryfield, £37 Loch House. Greyfaces £36.50 Underbank, £34.50 Hole of Lyne, £34.20 Park house. Also included in the sale was the annual prize show and sale of Cheviot & Blackface lambs ably judged by local feeder John P Fisher, Smalmstown, who awarded the following:

Hill Cheviots: 1st Mrs L Lueschar, Glendinning, selling at £36.20. 2nd John Higgs Farms, Meikledale, selling at £35.80, 3rd Messrs Elliott, Clenries, selling at £35.50.

Hill North Cheviots: 1st SRE Busby, Unthank, selling at £36.50.

Blackfaces: 1st Messrs Robson, Townshields, selling at £35. 2nd Mrs L Lueschar, Sundhope, selling at £36.20. 3rd Mrs L Lueschar, Megdale, selling at £32.

Trade for hill lambs was strong mostly up by £3 on the year. Other leading prices were as follows: Cheviots £36.80 Setthorns, £36 Cowburn, £35 Commonside. Blackfaces £35.20 Whintingstown, £30.50 Earlshaugh, £30 Sundhope.

Hexham and Northern Marts held their annual show and sale of Mule and other gimmers and ewes.

Mule Gimmers

An excellent entry and show of 3,138 Mule gimmers was forward and included several consignments which were previously sold at Tow Law auction mart.

With a full ring of buyers present a fast trade was met with the average being £4.20 up on last year.

The show was kindly sponsored by Barclays Bank (agricultural team North-East) and prior to the sale the show was expertly judged by Edwin Taylor and Alan Walton from Durhamfield who made their awards as follows:
