£3m student studios get go-ahead

A £3m development to provide state-of-the-art studios for students has been given the go-ahead by Middlesbrough planners.

Cleveland College of Art and Design is currently discussing its property strategy with the Learning and Skills Council.

And potential developments could include the building of 12 studios at its site in Green Lane, Middlesbrough.

David Lawton, director of estates for the college, said: "The college anticipates growth in student numbers over the next few years especially with the commencement of more foundation degrees. The final solution to the college's accommodation needs will need to be approved by the Funding Council."

The scheme for the 12 studios has been designed by a team from Niven Architects of Darlington, who have worked with the college on a number of projects.

The firm carried out all the modifications needed in college buildings under disability access legislation and designed the large "drawing barn" at Green Lane two years ago.

Simon Crowe, director of Niven Architects, said: "The continuing success of the college is creating demand for additional space and we are pleased to be involved in this new scheme that could provide 12 additional 70sq metre studios."

Mr Lawton added: "We like the fact that Niven Architects understand the education sector and understand some of the challenges we face in terms of funding.

"An empathy with education and past experience is always a good thing because of the changing trends in what is required in learning environments."
