'Exciting development' as EMCO is taken over
A 117-year-old Hartlepool company has been taken over by a large American manufacturer.
Expanded Metal Company (EMCO), which employs 225 people and turns over £35m, has been bought by Gibraltar Industries, a company based in Buffalo in New York state, with 3,600 staff.
Stephen Shears, managing director of EMCO, said: "This is an exciting development for Expanded Metal and our staff in Hartlepool.
"It offers some interesting challenges and excellent opportunities for the company to grow."
EMCO manufactures expanded metal mesh components and finished goods at manufacturing facilities in Hartlepool and Germany, supplying customers in the UK, Germany and elsewhere in Europe, as well as China and India. Gibraltar Industries, which manufactures and distributes metals for the building, automotive and industrial markets, operates 77 facilities in 26 states, in addition to Canada, Mexico, the UK, Germany and Poland.
