PRE-TREATMENT RULES IN FORCE

ANY company that produces waste is now responsible for its pre-treatment. Failure to comply may result in enforcement action by the Environment Agency.

How will it affect companies?

The rules mean that no waste can be taken directly to landfill without being pre-treated first, and that liquid waste is banned from landfill. You need to assess the amount and type of waste you produce and decide whether to treat it at source (usually by segregating recyclable materials) or arrange for your waste manager to do this for you.

Companies have to tell waste managing companies that their waste is untreated and that they wish them to treat it on their behalf to comply with the legislation. JBT Waste Services pre-treats customers’ waste at no extra charge.

What does treatment mean?

Pre-treatment has to meet a “three-point test”. By sending waste to JBT for pre-treatment companies comply thoroughly with each of the three points.

Do I need to do anything different?

When transferring waste to a waste manager, waste producers now need to make clear whether the waste is treated or not.

The Environment Agency recommend waste producers fill out a declaration and keep a copy.

How will I confirm that our business complies with the new rules?

JBT is sending customers an annual certificate to confirm that each is abiding by the regulations for pre-treatment.
