Water company is ‘immersed

NORTHUMBRIAN Water supplies water and waste water services to 2.6 million customers in the North East.

As well as providing essential services, the company is immersed in education in the communities it serves and has an exciting and varied education programme for schools, students, teachers and the wider community.

Water helps every cell in our bodies stay healthy and it is important for people of all generations to drink water to keep their minds and bodies active. Northumbrian Water’s younger customers, the “next generation”, need to drink enough water while they are growing, and medical evidence shows children who drink enough water throughout the day concentrate and perform better.

The GLOBE Project is a unique international environmental education initiative set up by Al Gore in 1995.

Northumbrian Water is providing 85 schools across the North East with a free, automated weather station and associated training, at a cost of £100,000, through the Northumbrian Water GLOBE project.

It is an enjoyable way for students to analyse scientific weather data on their local environment, while enhancing their skills across the National Curriculum, in Science, Geography, Maths, ICT and Citizenship.

The data gathered is not only used by Northumbrian Water to predict how its sewerage network copes in different weather conditions, it is also used by the Met Office, Nasa, scientists and other schools worldwide.
