Eco call for firms to cut water waste
ECO-experts have warned the fuel crisis will pale into comparison with water bill price hikes if businesses continue to drain limited supplies.
Envirowise is calling for companies on Teesside to cut down on the millions of litres they waste every day, estimated to cost them around £209m a year. And the bill is likely to go higher as water companies settled on an average 18% increase over the next five years.
Launching its free resource efficiency initiative - the Rippleffect - Elaine Sharp, programme marketing manager at Envirowise, said: “While cost-savings may be a key driver for water conservation, companies that do so demonstrate to customers that they are adopting best environmental practice. This in itself offers a competitive advantage.”
Although by no means the most profligate water users in the UK, businesses in the North-east use more than 596 million cubic metres every year - almost enough to fill over 150,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
By following its advice, Envirowise says businesses could save up to 30% on water and effluent bills.
