JBT to drive forward as it reaches a milestone

THIS year has been a milestone year for JBT Waste Services of Northumberland. Graham Palmer has just been appointed managing director of the growing company after five years as financial director. The move sees John Binks, who has built up the company over four decades, move to chief executive officer.

The company has undergone a £1m investment in the latest recycling equipment and a new building at JBT’s Bedlington base this year. The move was timely, positioning the company ahead of any other waste services company in the UK. The comprehensive installation of the most up-to-date equipment will dramatically speed the recycling rate of the company. It aims to recycle 95% of all waste within a year, and is targeting 100%.

JBT Waste Services is the largest independent recycling and waste management business in Northumberland. Its non-stop momentum has confirmed its position as the second largest employer in the Wansbeck region.

The company is winning public and private sector customers throughout the region because of its professional approach and commitment to keep ahead of government targets. During 2008 JBT has welcomed major new customers including Bellway, Rok, and Frank Haslam Milan.

JBT works with each client to provide customised solutions for waste management and recycling problems. Bellway Homes and JBT Waste Services, for example, are working together to pioneer a super-efficient waste recycling on-site scheme that is helping the housebuilder beat stringent Government construction waste targets. The new recycling solution is leading the way in the region for on-site segregated waste collection.

JBT client Alcan is actively engaged in projects on site aimed at waste minimisation measures through engineering design and improvements in operational control. As Alcan’s main waste contractor, JBT enables Alcan to best meet its environmental aims regarding waste.

Mr Palmer said: “We now have the resources and expertise to tackle complex, large waste collections and to be able to recycle the material efficiently. Because we take away all types of waste, such as cement, rubble and plastics, our works increases safety standards and improves the appearance of workplaces instantly.”

Landfill tax is rising extremely quickly and is due to increase again next year. JBT’s dedicated new building for construction waste means that house building, construction and demolition companies can rely on JBT’s speedy response and ability to recycle almost all materials to keep landfill costs down and help businesses meet their requirements under Site Waste Management Plans.

The way in which JBT works alongside customers is protecting it from the current turbulent economic conditions which have seen the market for recycled products suffering a dramatic downturn. The company’s sound financial base, professional approach and investment in equipment and staff mean that it is well placed to drive forward its business during the year to come.
