Modern matrons making your hospitals better

Deborah Blackburn, Aileen Beatty, Annaluisa Wood and Julie Barton

NORTHUMBRIA Healthcare is celebrating the first birthday of modern matrons continuing to drive up standards in all its hospitals across Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Over the past twelve months the 31 highly skilled matrons have been ensuring patients receive first-class nursing care. They are present in the Trust's three general and seven community hospitals seven-days-a week, supporting ward staff, relatives and carers, making sure they receive the advice, assistance and support they need.

Steve Russell, Trust director responsible for community hospitals said: “I'm extremely proud of the dedication our team of modern matrons has shown over the last year. Community hospitals are an important resource for local people and our matrons have helped improve an already very good standard of care so that patients and relatives are well cared for. It's great working with such an impressive team who have already achieved real improvements for patients.”

Two chief matrons oversee and develop the team of matrons providing clinical and nursing leadership and identifying education and training opportunities.

Although each matron ensures the standards at the hospital they work in, they are also responsible for a specific area of work such as elderly care, emergency care or orthopaedics. Some matrons work Trust-wide.
