A FAST-GROWING engineering company which is beating the recession was last night named Tyneside and Northumberland Company of the Year.
North Tyneside company Merit Merrell Technology took the top title in the second heat of the region’s most prestigious business awards, beating Gateshead office equipment maker United Carbon Office Systems and Blaydon touchscreen maker Zytronic.
Merit Merrell Technology’s success in the awards, organised by The Journal and Evening Gazette in association with Business Link, caps years of strong growth for the pipework specialist, which is part of the specialist engineering group Merit Merrell.
Tony Wells, managing director of Merit Merrell Technology, said: "It’s a bit of a surprise. I know when we started this six years ago I didn’t expect to be here today.
"The award is for our staff, our team, who have put so much effort into it over the years and I dedicate it to them."
Wallsend company Merit Merrell employs more than 280 people and last year saw revenues top £50m after growth had accelerated steeply in the past six years.
The company has a diverse range of clients across various countries and industries and prides itself on its ability to work on unusual projects where innovative solutions are essential.
