Quality service defeats recession

ONE of the North’s leading independent IT firms, United Carlton Office Systems, enhanced its profile by reaching the finals of the North East Business Awards.

The Team Valley company, which specialises in full colour and mono digital copier/printers as well as scanning, large format, audio visual and document management and telecoms, was shortlisted for Company of the Year.

Heading the company are managing director John Watson and directors Michael Nelson, John Ellis, Warren Colby, Mark Bryce and financial director Paul Dawson. Adam Fawcett and Nick Speight are regional directors of the operation in Yorkshire.

Mr Ellis said: “United Carlton is continuing to grow and expand and we are bucking the trend in the current financial climate. We are going in the right direction.

“Projected group turnover is expected to be up £1.8m on the previous year, we are expanding into new premises and have taken on new staff, both in Gateshead and Yorkshire.” Mr Bryce said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for Company of the Year at such a prestigious event. This is testament to the hard work and dedication of all our staff. On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank them for their efforts.”

Recent achievements reinforce its position as the region’s premier provider of goods from electronics manufacturers Sharp and Toshiba.

United Carlton continues to buck the trend, enjoying dramatic growth, and has a projected group turnover this year of more than £10m.

Mr Colby said: “The business continues to be committed to the Team Valley and will be moving into prestigious new premises on Dukesway early in May. This is a significant milestone and will see the whole North East operation run from one site which will include purpose- built offices, service facilities and warehousing space.”

For the second time in three years, United Carlton has made The Journal’s Fastest 50 companies, being placed 18th at this year’s ceremony at Baltic.

The company has an impressive base of more than 4,000 clients and has established an operation in Yorkshire, securing major contracts with authorities such as East Riding of York Council as well as commercial business. So successful is the York office that it has built an impressive portfolio of more than 1,000 digital copiers in just over three years.

United Carlton has also secured the prestigious Durham County Council contract for digital copiers for the ninth year, an indication of the professionalism customers have come to expect. This has helped ensure United Carlton remains the region’s largest independent supplier of digital copiers.

United Carlton’s corporate strategy is not to rely on one supplier, but to offer customers an independent view of the latest equipment. As it has the region’s largest resource of digital copier engineers and IT personnel, United Carlton is able to achieve the rapid call-out times clients expect. Mr Bryce said: “There are some fabulous career opportunities at the company and we would welcome any inquiries for positions within our growing sales, telesales and after-care team.”

Mr Nelson said: “Our multi- functional copiers do more than just copy. They are able to copy, print and even scan directly into most back office applications, including Sharepoint and Microsoft Exchange.”

MD Mr Watson said: “Although the company’s product portfolio has increased, service remains the cornerstone of our business.”

Mono pages have a very low cost per copy. Colour-capable MFDs also offer speed, quality and cost advantages.
