The world’s leading manufacturer of paints for boats and aircraft has worked hard to minimise the waste it generates from its large plant at Felling. A review in 2007 led to a host of new practices that have benefited the environment and the local community.

Barker and Stonehouse
The Middlesbrough furniture retailer believes in carrying out its operations with respect for, and minimal impact on, the environment. Along with one of its main suppliers in Indonesia, it has started the independent, non-profit Trees4Trees scheme which replenishes forests and benefits communities. Its new Middlesbrough warehouse recycles 95% of waste, has a biomass boiler for heating and full roof lighting. Now the firm has started mattress and furniture recycling.

In the past 10 years, this Washington coffin maker has examined every aspect of its work to improve its impact on the environment. This has led to simple but effective steps, including turning wood waste into heat and electricity and ensuring all its materials are accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council. As well as cutting its power bills, it has also reduced harmful emissions by installing roller- coating lines for its base coat of water based lacquers.
