Flexible working is good for you

I remember seeing a movie once about time travel. It was Woody Allen who travelled into the future to find people gorging themselves on cream cakes and red meat whilst washing it down with plenty of alcohol and finishing off with a cigarette. He was of course horrified at this unhealthy behaviour until, to his delight, they explained that in the future scientists had discovered it was all very good for you!

However, before you all go rushing out for a packet of cigarettes or a nice cream cake I must point out that unfortunately, it was only a movie and most definitely fiction!

I think there would have been a similar reaction from anyone from 30 years ago travelling to the present time. From a strict culture of 9 till 5 to a culture of promoting work life balance, home-working and flexible working practices. I think they would have thought today’s employers were mad!

Unlike the first scenario however, this is not fiction and it is very good for you. In fact it is good for the employee, the employer, the business and the environment!

I remember working for an employer that did not have any flexible working practices. I remember the traffic jams, the stress in just getting to work on time and managing any outside work needs or commitments. When I decided to have children I was forced to leave work - simply because there was no other alternative.

Those employers who have removed those barriers to people achieving their full potential by implementing good working practices, including innovative flexible working practices are now reaping the benefits in attracting and retaining the best people to do the job.

Unfortunately, some employers have not yet ‘seen the light’ and that is why the Work Wise North East campaign is so important. Equality North East know the benefits of good equality working practices and through the North East Equality Awards, recognise and reward those employers who are leading the way. There are nine award categories this year and for the first time awards will feature a ‘Work Wise’ category.

The closing date for the applications is 30th June so to find out more about how you can apply or sponsor please contact Helen@equality-ne.co.uk.

It is good for you – and that’s a fact.
