MCNULTY Offshore Construction is a leading manufacturer in the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors, and it is poised to clinch orders when the UK nuclear industry starts replacing old stock.
McNulty, originally a small stevedore business in 1906, has built an unrivaled reputation, making key sections of offshore oil and gas rigs, and is now taking advantage of the growth in the alternative energy market.
It is currently completing a giant accommodation module which can hold 80 people. The 1,600-tonne structure will soon be moved to a special loading bay at the yard on the mouth of the River Tyne, before being loaded on to a vessel for the final leg of its journey to the Auk Alpha offshore platform in the North Sea.
Earlier this year the company completed a similar mammoth project when it built an electrical substation for the Siemens offshore wind farm. The 2,000-tonne structure was designed and built in 18 months and the company beat tough competition to get the order.
The firm is also versatile, willing to turn its expertise to a variety of tasks from the fabrication of small pipe stools, to the building of complete topsides for floating production storage and off loading vessels. McNulty has proved it can meet the needs of a diverse portfolio of clients.
It currently employs 600 people in six skilled trades such as electricians and welders at its base in South Shields.
The next job in the pipeline is for a company called Subsea 7 making underwater tie-lines to hold heavy structures in place, even in the worst weather.
McNulty prides itself on its 70-strong design team, based in the North East and at the McNulty Group’s other base in Aberdeen.

McNulty has been awarded the coveted UK Safety Assessment in the last few days, and in recent years it has also won the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Gold Award.
The company also holds crucial ISO9001,ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification which is part of its professional approach and is strives to improve existing management systems.
Although trading conditions for many businesses are tough, McNulty is ready to meet any new challenges.Its managing director Terry Masterton has been with the company for two years but he has a wealthy of experience and 33 years in the industry.
