Heavyweights recruit dealmakers of future

TWO of the region's largest accountancy offices have recruited the North East dealmakers of the future with their annual graduate intake.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Newcastle has appointed 20 new graduates and one HEADstart placement and Deloitte has recruited 12 graduates to its Newcastle office.

Half of PwC’s graduates have joined from local universities and the HEADstart placement joins the firm directly from college, having studied in Cheshire.

The majority of the graduates will be studying for the Association of Chartered Accountants (ACA) qualification.

Paul Woolston, senior partner, PwC, Newcastle, said: “PwC believes in fostering and retaining the region’s graduates along with supporting the local community, this will help to further strengthen our practice and our local expertise which in turn benefits our clients.

“Having recently been awarded the Branch of the Year award at the North East Accountancy Awards, it is important that we continue to invest in the future of our firm and our people.

“Our new graduates are a welcome addition to a very strong and committed team here in Newcastle. I’m delighted to welcome them to our Newcastle office and wish them all the best with their careers at the firm.”

After receiving a large number of graduate applications for its 2010/11 scheme, Deloitte has recruited 12 graduates to its Newcastle office, giving them their first entry into the corporate sector.

The graduates will begin their training at the firm’s new office based at One Trinity Gardens on Newcastle’s Quayside, having joined after graduating from universities both within and outside the North East.

The next three years for the graduates will include financial training, as well as time spent at clients’ offices and Deloitte’s Newcastle office, where they will work on live client projects and study for Chartered Accountancy exams.

David Robinson 25, from Wynyard, graduated from the University of York with a BA in politics, philosophy and economics. He will join Deloitte’s audit team as an associate. He said: “My ambition was to work for one of the North East’s big four firms and Deloitte in particular had a great reputation.

“ I was attracted by the opport- unity to become ACA qualified and start a solid career with arguably the best professional services firm in the world.”

Paul Williamson, office senior partner at Deloitte in Newcastle, said: “Competition has never been so fierce ... therefore attracting the best graduate talent is fundamental to the long-term success of Deloitte both nationally and regionally.”
