Dave Bassett
Managing director, Homes and Finance in Yarm.
What did you want to be when you were young?
It's quite different to what I do now but I wanted to be a fireman.
How much was your first pay packet and what did you spend it on?
I can remember that distinctly! I did a paper round and I got £6.50 which paid for some petrol for my 50cc motorbike, entrance to the old Kirk nightclub and two cans of Red Stripe when I was in there.
What's your dream job, other than you current one?
Working in property has always been my dream and will always be but I guess the real dream job would be to be working in property development in somewhere like Miami which is a beautiful place with an interesting market. Property in any warmer climes would be ideal.
What's the best piece of business advice you have received?
Make sure you do business without borrowing and keep overheads to a minimum.
And the worst?
Take people on face value and work on instinct. Business is always business and you can't just take someone at face value. You need to look deeper than that.
What is your philosophy when it comes to business?
Be efficient and service focused - always has been and always will be.
What are your hobbies?
I really enjoy windsurfing and as a family we love travelling to new places around the world and skiing when we can fit it in. And we always enjoy socialising and cooking dinner for friends.
What's your top business or financial tip?
Always be accessible - don't cut yourself off and assume other people will deal with things for you.
Does anything scare you and if so what?
I don't really get scared about anything in particular as I just deal with things as they happen. Saying that, bills scare me.
What would you choose as your epitaph?
He lived life thinking about today and not worrying about tomorrow.
