Keith Proudfoot

Northern region director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.

What did you want to be when you were young?
A priest helping the homeless - my parents told me to get a job that paid better. I nearly studied catering to become a chef, but instead my A-levels took me to Bath University to study economics.

How much was your first pay packet and what did you spend it on?
Four shillings (20p), delivering Sunday newspapers - fortunately they weren't the mammoth tomes of today. Can't remember how I spent the first week's pay, but I usually saved it up for a few weeks, then spent it on bicycle accessories or a Beatles record.

What's your dream job, other than your current one?
Sports reporter for Radio 5 - the access to a huge variety of sports events is so appealing. Clem has done it, so there's still hope!

What's the best piece of business advice you have received?
Cash is king.

And the worst?
It will all come good if we spend a bit more.

What is your philosophy when it comes to business?
Tight control of expenditure. Remember it's true that your people are your best asset, so treat them fairly and with consideration.

What are your hobbies?
A classic Mini Cooper, not so old it's falling apart, and managing a fantasy football team.

What's your top business or financial tip?
If cash really is king - and it is - remember that communication is queen.

Does anything scare you and if so what?
The future for my children.

What would you choose as your epitaph?
He was an OK guy.
