Hugh McGouran

Chief executive of Tees Valley Community Foundation

What did you want to be when you were young?
I wanted to be an incredibly successful drummer in a world famous rock band. I had a go but instead of living it up and enjoying five star luxury, we lived in a 1960 Bedford bus and never got paid.

How much was your first pay packet and what did you spend it on?
I can't remember how much it was, I think it was around £10. I was working pre Christmas in Dixons on Stockton High Street. I seem to remember buying a Zippo lighter and 20 Gitanes, oh how things change.

What's your dream job, other than your current one?
I still dream of the rock and roll lifestyle. The dream would be to walk on to a stage in front of a Knebworth size crowd, sit behind a great band and play like my life depended on it.

What's the best piece of business advice you have received?
Keep focused on the end game.

And the worst?
Don't worry; it will all work out fine.

What is your philosophy when it comes to business?
Try it, it might work.

What are your hobbies?
I still play a bit in a local blues band and I love all things to do with cars and motorsport.

What's your top business or financial tip?
Always employ people who are cleverer than you are.

Does anything scare you, and if so what?
Most things, a good friend once described me as an ocean of paranoia.

What would you choose as your epitaph?
I'm not really bothered, I won't be there to see it. If I'm remembered as fondly as my dad, that will do.
