What did you want to be when you were young?

An engineer.

How much was your first pay packet and what did you spend it on?

I earned £36 in my first week working on a building site. I gave one third to my mother as housekeeping money and spent the rest on clothes and cigarettes - a bad habit long since given up.

What's your dream job, other than your current one?

I would quite fancy working as a freelance musician.

What's the best piece of business advice you have received?

Keep a close eye on cash flow.

And the worst?

Save money by cutting maintenance costs.

What is your philosophy when it comes to business?

Look for opportunities, and then move quickly.

What are your hobbies?

Playing the pipe organ and the fiddle, and hill-walking.

What's your top business or financial tip?

Talk to lots of people to find out what is coming over the horizon.

Does anything scare you and if so what?

I wouldn’t try bungee jumping.

What would you choose as your epitaph?

He did what he could to make the world a better place.
