Debbie Bowman

managing director, Century FM

What did you want to be when you were young?

My childhood dream was to be an air hostess. I thought it would be an incredibly glamorous way of seeing the world. Now that I’ve totted up so many air miles over the years, I’m very glad indeed that I didn’t go down that route.

How much was your first pay packet and what did you spend it on?

Not much! I had a Saturday job working in what would now be called a deli, but back then was more of a corner shop, in my home town of Galston in Scotland. When I got my first pay packet, I headed straight to the make-up counter at Woolworths in Kilmarnock.

What’s your dream job, other than your current one?

I would love to be someone who travels around the country testing all the treatments at health spas. The job doesn’t exist but I’d still love to do it.

What’s the best piece of business advice you have received?

Never over-promise and under-deliver.

And the worst?

I only remember the good advice as the bad advice is worthless.

What is your philosophy when it comes to business?

Be as upfront and honest as possible and be agonisingly fair.

What are your hobbies?

I don’t get time to enjoy any hobbies as my two children, aged 10 and 14, take up all my spare time. I’m mum’s taxi service at the weekend. I do enjoy the theatre and travelling though.

What’s your top business or financial tip?

It’s not the business that succeeds, it’s the people in the business that bring success. Investing in your team is crucial as is bringing the right people to your business in the first place.

Does anything scare you and if so what?

I’m not mad keen on the dark.

What would you choose as your epitaph?

Debbie asked not to answer this.
