HomeNewsQ&A

Bob Cuffe

Publishing director, Gazette Media Company

What did you want to be when you were young?

A journalist. When I told my careers master he wasn’t happy - he told me it was a seedy and dishonest profession. I definitely wanted to be a journalist after that.

How much was your first pay packet and what did you spend it on?

£8 a week for weekend work at the Citizens Social Club in Redcar. This was immediately deposited behind the bar at the Royal Hotel, also in Redcar.

What’s your dream job, other than your current one?

As a born and bred Teessider I’m genuinely thrilled to have the job I have. My dream job - in other words the one you’ll never get - would be to be a writer. In a hot climate.

What’s the best piece of business advice you have received?

Whatever you do, always do your best, and be true to the man in the mirror (copyright George Joseph Cuffe - plumber).

And the worst?

Don’t ever be a boss. Always remain one of the lads. (George Joseph Cuffe again - alongside “Don’t trust a man who doesn’t drink”).

What is your philosophy when it comes to business?

Act honestly, work hard, be positive and treat others with respect.

What are your hobbies?

Sports. Usually Sky Sports. And family. I’ve been told by my wife to say family.

What’s your top business or financial tip?

Promote talented people with potential and the right attitude.

Does anything scare you and if so what?

Dolls. Particularly china dolls. And clowns. I’m not proud of these, but you did ask.

What would you choose as your epitaph?

Fabulous wealth didn’t change him.
