Keith Moss

Fine art and commercial photographer, who runs a gallery of his work with his wife Pat at Brotton.

What did you want to be when you were young?

I wanted to be an engineer - like my Dad. I was fascinated by huge earth-moving equipment, like Caterpillars. I guess you could say I wanted to make the earth move!

How much was your first pay packet and what did you spend it on?

I did lots of odd jobs for people and made about £15 in my first week which was great. I spent it on some vinyl records- a whole selection.

What's your dream job, other than your current one?

If I wasn't doing what I was doing I'd be a chef- I love cooking, food and entertaining. I used to be a butcher so I am passionate about locally produced, good quality meat.

What's the best piece of business advice you have received?

If you believe in something and keep believing in it, it will happen.

And the worst?

There's been so much bad advice - more bad than good. Someone once told me I should open a pound shop!

What is your philosophy when it comes to business?

People buy people - you have to make them feel special. Customer service is the single most important factor in what I do.

What are your hobbies?

Obviously photography is my passion. But I love cooking, entertaining and locally-produced food. I also love discovering new places - it inspires a lot of my photography.

What's your top business or financial tip?

Believe in yourself. If you're good at something then go for it - live your dream.

Does anything scare you and if so what?

Failure.

What would you choose as your epitaph?

I told you I was ill!
