John Conroy

Managing director of Stagecoach North East - John spends most of his time at the Teesside depot which is based in Stockton.

What did you want to be when you were young?

I wanted to be an accountant and so when I left school I joined the National Coal Board to train for my qualifications.

How much was your first pay packet and what did you spend it on?

It was so long ago I can’t remember! I do remember buying a record player with it though.

What’s your dream job, other than your current one?

I recently had dinner with a friend who in my eyes has the perfect job. If he is having a bad week then he may work only two days, a good week will see him work four days - he is a professional golfer. As a golf fan I believe he has a great job getting to travel and play the world’s best courses while doing what he loves best.

What’s the best piece of business advice you have received?

Don’t be afraid to take a chance.

And the worst?

Leave it to the lawyers.

What is your philosophy when it comes to business?

Each year we must make progress.

What are your hobbies?

I used to play a lot of golf but now I prefer snooker and am lucky enough to have a table at home. Horseracing is another passion and I attend meetings across the country whenever I can.

What’s your top business or financial tip?

To listen to your staff and customers - they are your eyes and ears on the ground.

Does anything scare you and if so what?

Ill health.

What would you choose as your epitaph?

This is why ill health scares me!
