Levels of traffic on road is rising

BY 2025 it is estimated that there will be 50% more cars on the road than there were in 1997. That’s not just a potential environmental problem, but a practical and financial one for businesses, too.

Government-backed green business body, Envirowise is encouraging office-based companies to look at how they could boost productivity and cut carbon emissions by putting eco-friendly business practices at the top of their agenda, including travel.

It is recommending organisations consider the following practical measures:

Consider if travelling to a meeting is absolutely essential. Could time and effort be saved by arranging a teleconference instead?

Investigate web conferencing – a web interface can have many benefits, not least allowing you to share documents and collaborate on presentations.

Promote home working to cut commuting. It can also lead to a better work/life balance, which is important for staff retention and team morale.

Involve staff across all levels to help gather practical ideas for tackling environmental issues more effectively and increasing productivity throughout the workplace.

Improve planning of staff travel commitments and encourage easily accessible conference venues to reduce travel.

Make sure documents are sent electronically as often as possible, and only print them out when absolutely necessary.
