New council pool springing up

WHEN Tyneside-born swimmer Sue Rolph returned from the 2000 Sydney Olympics without a medal, she launched a scathing attack on the poor facilities of the North-East – an area without a single 50m pool.

Today, however, one of the most impressive swimming facilities in the country is rapidly taking shape on our doorstep.

The £20m Sunderland Aquatic Centre, a stone’s throw from the Stadium of Light, was created by Newcastle-based Red Box Design Group on behalf of Sunderland City Council.

The pool is expected to be completed by next spring and keen swimmers can now take a behind the scenes look at the venue by logging on to nebusiness.co.uk.
