Chance to talk to the stars

A NEW construction network aims to support the next generation of business leaders by giving them the chance to meet up with a host of industry ‘gurus’.

Leaders Connect, which is to be launched at Gateshead’s Hilton hotel on March 27, has been set up by industry coach Dave Stitt and will provide aspiring construction bosses with the chance to speak to a number of business leaders through events and online forums.

Although similar construction groups are run by the Government, Stitt believes a scheme operated by the industry itself will provide unrivalled access to the best advice and networking opportunities.

Stitt has 30 years of construction experience behind him and set up business advice group DSA Building Performance in Sunderland in 2001, where he will continue to act as managing director.

He said: “We hear a lot about the skills shortage in the construction industry. However, the really big issue facing construction right now is the need for leadership skills. ”

Stitt’s advice has benefited many construction firms in the North East, including Newcastle-based company Whelan, which recently consulted him over a shake-up in its management.

Tony Whelan, managing director at the firm, said: “I have worked with Dave Stitt closely for several years now and he has been a key player in our company development. He has an understanding of construction in the UK that is second to none.”
