Homes tailor made for local needs

AN affordable-housing provider has started work on a £1.4m scheme to build homes in a South Tyneside community.
Newcastle group NomadE5, part of the Isos Group, is developing 12 homes on Lavender Lane in South Shields, after consulting South Tyneside Council about what type of property was needed locally.
Hartlepool firm Yuill Construction, part of the Cecil M Yuill group, won the tender to build seven houses, each with three bedrooms, four bungalows with two bedrooms, and a three-bedroom bungalow suitable for disabled residents.
Just under half the cost of the £629,000 scheme is being funded by the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), and NomadE5 is adding £73,000 of “recycled capital grant”, which is cash that is generated from the sale of shared ownership properties.
The remainder of the construction costs for the project, which is expected to be completed by March 2010, are funded from NomadE5’s present borrowing facilities.
NomadE5 chair Roy Ashton said: “We are pleased to be getting this scheme started, to provide the kind of homes needed in this part of South Shields.
“We have a strong partnership with South Tyneside Council and Yuill, and that should ensure we build high quality homes where local people can live their lives in security and comfort.”
Cecil M Yuill managing director David Mullins said: “We are proud to work in partnership with NomadE5 in regenerating areas such as Lavender Lane, providing much-needed, high quality homes for residents. We hope that this successful partnership will continue.”
The sit e on Lavender Lane was previously a builder’s depot, alongside some low-quality open space which was disused for many years, where NomadE5 invested in a major clean-up operation
Coun Bill Brady, lead member for housing futures at South Tyneside Council, said: “We recognise the importance of providing quality, affordable housing in our communities and it is great to see this site being put to good use.”
