SURGO Construction has picked up two contracts worth in excess of £3.5m despite the current tough market in the industry.
The Newcastle-based firm has won work with Isos Housing in North Tyneside for a £2.23m scheme and a £1.3m contract for improvements at Redcar Community College.
The work with Isos is at the housing association’s Coronation Street site in Wallsend. As lead contractor, Surgo has taken on a 35-week contract to construct a timber-framed, brick- faced building.
The premises will contain 28 apartments over four floors and Surgo will also build two houses and two Tyneside-style flats at the site.
The firm has already worked with Isos on a number of occasions, including constructing a close of 16 bungalows and a domestic abuse refuge.
Lea Smith, development and regeneration manager for Isos Housing, said: “We are pleased to be working with Surgo on the Coronation Street project following successful partnerships in the past.
“We are confident the scheme will be delivered on time and to budget.”
Surgo’s other new contract for Redcar Community College is a 21-week project to improve the front facade of the existing building and provide accommodation for the Adult Learning Service. The project is due for completion at the end of August.
The firm, which is recognised across the region as an established building contractor within the education sector, is already working on a major contract in the town.
It is constructing the £8.3m innovative Redcar Hub, which will provide a centre and high-quality workspace for digital and creative industries from across the area.
The Hub building is in a prominent position on Redcar’s seafront and will help to create 60 new jobs and support 50 businesses.
Surgo director Jeff Alexander said: “We continue to meet the challenges of the construction sector head on and are delighted with these latest wins in what continues to be a difficult market.
“Our reputation for reliability, quality and value for money are of the utmost importance when the market is so price sensitive.
“These qualities form the foundation for our continuing success in winning contracts across our chosen market sectors.”
