North contractor announces £50m contract wins

THE North East offices of construction contractor Shepherd Engineering Services have announced new contract wins with a combined build value of £50m.

The Newcastle-based division says it is looking for growth next year and has won three contracts with inspired spaces, the company set up by Carillion and its joint venture partners for the Government’s Building Schools for the Future programme.

Working under the STaG (South Tyneside and Gateshead) BSF initiative, the first of three new project wins sees SES working on delivery of Keelman’s Way School – a new 3,800sqm two-storey school for children with special education needs in Hebburn. It is working on a second STaG project, to build a new swimming pool adjacent to Jarrow School, which it expects to complete later this year.

And its largest education contract is to work on the Durham BSF initiative on the North Durham Academy project in Stanley.

On this project, SES has applied its extensive knowledge and experience of advanced BIM (building information modeling) to provide fully coordinated building services throughout the 14,500sqm, four-storey secondary school. The project is due to complete in the summer of 2013.

These contracts follow recent high-profile project completions within the energy and industrial sectors, namely construction of a 32m high, 100m blade-testing facility, believed to be the first in the world, for Narec – the National Renewable Energy Centre, Blyth and a factory for the leading rope manufacturer Bridon International.

Regional director Steve Joyce said: “Recently our design ability and innovative approach has been truly put to the test on delivery of the Narec project. Because of the sheer size and height of the building traditional methods of M&E installation and containment could not be used, therefore the project required us to think outside the box. To overcome this challenge we applied technical know-how, coupled with PRISM, our bespoke off-site prefabrication facility, to manufacture and fully test modularised building services ahead of installation. I am delighted this building has now been successfully handed over.

“Securing our appointment on these latest education sector contracts provides us with further opportunity to continue to work across all levels of the education sector. Working closely with our project partners on the inspired spaces team, we have been able to get under the skin of each project and understand what is required, for example the stringent acoustic needs on Keelman’s Way School, to deliver a range of innovative building services solutions. “
