The annual spring machinery sale was held at Kelso Racecourse.A good entry of interesting items met on enthusiastic demand with prospective buyers travelling from all over Europe. Bidding was brisk particularly on the well known manufactures brands with reserves being easily reached.

Crop: There were fewer loads forward due to the time of year. Mini heston bales of barley straw sold to £85 per tonne. Wheat straw in mini hestons sold to £50 per tonne and in round bales £10 per bale.
Ewes and lambs: A mixed show of 746 ewes and lambs were forward with trade just dropping away slightly after last weeks highs.

There was an entry of 140 prime cattle, 23 bulls, 428 prime sheep. Cattle were a much stronger trade with averages increasing to 173p for clean cattle
The top price of 200p pr kg was paid for a British Blue Steer shown by Ashburner Ltd., High House, Sandwith, Whitehaven. Top price of £1335.84 per head was paid to GN & DM Bowe, Bothel Parks, Bothel.
Heifers made top price of 198.50p pr kg for a British Blue shown by Messrs Tweddell, Haltcliffe Bridge, Hesket New Market and was purchased by R J Harrison Butchers, Wigton. The top price per head for heifers was £1141.65 for a Limousin shown by Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Gilsland.
Bulls made top price of 175.50p pr kg for a Limousin Bull shown by WR & JM Cowx & Son, Hudscales, Hesket New Market. The top price of £1161.16 per head was paid for a Limousin Bull shown by T A Byers, Ellenbank, Boltongate.

Lambs: A tremendous entry of lambs and despite reports of trades below 190p per kg further south our quality pushing our average higher than last week. Increased buyers around the ring contributing but the biggest factor was the number of lambs falling in the 39-42 kgs and a fair majority at this weight £85-£92.
Top price of £122 was paid for Texel lambs shown by T Bell & Son, Clement Leazes, Hallbankgate and were purchased by R J Harrison Butchers, Wigton. A pen of Beltex lambs shown by Messrs Jefferson, Abbey Cowper, Abbeytown made top price of 272.5p pr kg these were also purchased by R J Harrison Butcher, Wigton.

Black and white bull calves also continued to sell well with 14 day old calves averaging over £50.

Dairy: A similar number of cows were forward with all classes selling well. The sale also included the first stage of the dispersal from Messrs JH & E Ivinson, Plumpton Foot Farm, Calthwaite who sold their April and May calved cows. This sale of good newly calved cows was well supported by friends and neighbours and all animals selling to exceed Mr Ivinson’s expectations.
