Advice is at hand over expanding to Asia

COULD your business make the leap to Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia? Firms are being encouraged to think about potential markets in Asia this month at two events run by UK Trade and Investment (UKTI).

The export experts are putting on the meetings as part of an initiative launched in December promoting UK activity in the east.

The first will take place on Tuesday (February 7) from 1pm to 4pm, and will focus on Vietnam and Indonesia, while the second will occur the following Monday (February 13) and will cover the Thai market.

Geoff Charlesworth, one of UKTI’s international trade advisers, said: “North East companies are already proving themselves in markets around the globe and we are determined to help drive up exports and the number of exporters in the region, which is the only way for the economy to grow.

“There can be no doubt of the importance of Asian markets. Companies cannot afford to ignore the potential they offer.

“Whether a company is completely new to exporting or already has established markets overseas, UKTI can provide support though a wide range of services to help them develop and implement an export plan to turn the potential that these Asian markets offer into new business.”

UK exports to the 12 markets in the campaign were worth £25bn over last year, and there is significant opportunity for further growth.

Consumer spending in Asian countries is forecast to be around $32tn a year by 2030, around 43% of world consumption.

Guest speakers on the first event will be Andy Ziardis, consul (trade and investment) at the British Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, and Deborah Clarke, the director of trade and investment at the British Embassy in Jakarta.

The second will feature Bradley Jones, the head of UKTI in Bangkok.

Delegates will be able to give an insight into the two markets and discuss issues and opportunities with companies one-to-one.

Both events will be held at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium. Places are free, but limited.

Book in advance through the hotline on 0845 050 5054 or through enquiries@ukti.rito.co.uk.
