Communities are doing the spadework

GROW-your-own is just as popular on Teesside.

In east Middlesbrough, residents have given the Town Farm site a massive makeover by creating a community allotment.

The project now boasts Middlesbrough’s first composting toilet, a building with a learning area, and various gardening plots for family and community use.

Work has been funded by Groundwork, STEM, Middlesbrough Council, the Big Lottery Fund and Erimus Housing.

Meanwhile, gardening enthusiasts in Eston have raised £18,000 to improve security and set up a horticultural supplies shop.

The Bankfields Allotments Association has attracted support from local councils and Redcar and Cleveland’s Local Enterprise Growth Fund.

“We are converting a steel unit into the shop,” said association secretary Ray Witherley.
