SIMILAR Dragon’s Den style bids have kick-started the careers of several business virgins in the Tees Valley.
In 2008 Guisborough fireman Matt Stirland, right, won the If We Can, You Can title and went on to launch two businesses on the back of a comparatively modest seed fund of £2,000. Street Life Youth Fitness, which was joined last year by Military Fitness Group, turned over £75,000 in its first year of operation.
Late last year, 21-year-old Jade Stephenson, pictured, from Wynyard, scooped a £60,000 business start-up package from Stockton’s Wellington Square operators Stenham and landlords Park Lane Estate. She quit her job as a sales assistant with M&S and set about opening Wardrobe - a retail venture that brought the eBay principle to the high street. The store, which traded strongly over Christmas, offered a route to market for high quality second hand clothes and accessories.
