Highlands steal the show

Pedigree Highland, Aberdeen Angus and Shorthorn animals figured prominently at the third annual show and sale of British native breed cattle at Craven Cattle Marts' Skipton Auction Mart, last week.

The fixture again highlighted the growing popularity of native breed cattle, coupled with increasing demand for their meat.

The Highlands that stole the show. Robert and Wendy Phillip, of Green Farm, Hellifield, took first prize in the heifers class with in-calf three-year-old, Lucky Clover of Donnachadh, which sold for £560 to Frank Carr, of H Carr & Sons, Lee Gate Farm, Malham. Highland cattle first arrived at Green Farm in 2002 and the fold now totals 135.

Mr and Mrs Phillip sell Highland beef at their own farm shop. Their cattle can also be seen above Malham Cove, where the couple support the Limestone Country Beef Project, a pioneering initiative that encourages farmers to replace intensive sheep farming in the Yorkshire Dales with traditional cattle breeds.
