And it's all because the lady fidgets

FIGURES from all sectors of society have paid tribute to “inspirational” entrepreneur Dame Anita Roddick following her sudden death from a brain haemorrhage.

The pioneer of “profit with principles” died at the age of 64 on Monday evening in hospital with her husband, Gordon, and daughters Sam and Justine at her side. Her sudden death brought emotional tributes from the many charities, organisations and individuals she had helped or worked with during her many years as a businesswoman, campaigner and activist.

The Prime Minister led the tributes, calling Dame Anita one of this country’s “true pioneers”.

Gordon Brown said: “As one of this country’s most successful businesswomen, she was an inspiration to women throughout the country striving to set up and grow their own companies.”

Dame Anita became known originally for her Body Shop cosmetic empire, which specialised in bringing “eco-friendly” products to the public.

But she gained international recognition for championing many causes close to her heart, from green issues to human rights and Third World debt.

Richard Lambert, director-general of the CBI, said: “She was a role model in all kinds of ways and a visionary business leader.”

Sir Richard Branson said: “She led the way – showing the world that success in business can go hand in hand with making the world a better place.”
