Emissions reduction programme for Amec

ENGINEERING giant Amec has won a contract to create a revolutionary carbon dioxide network which could help reduce UK emissions by millions of tonnes a year.
The company has been awarded the contract to prepare a study to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of creating a distributed CO2 network within the Yorkshire and Humber region. Engineering work will be carried out at the firm’s Darlington office with environmental consultancy support being provided by Amec Earth and Environmental in London.
The network would become part of a regional carbon capture and storage network.
It would connect a number of fixed point sources, such as large power stations, and sites like depleted gas fields. A capture and storage network could provide the potential to reduce the UK’s CO2 emissions by 60m tonnes a year.
The £100,000 contract was awarded by development agency Yorkshire Forward. Financial support is being provided by BP, ConocoPhillips, Drax Power, E.ON, Powerfuels, Scottish and Southern and Shell.
Amec UK Industrial director of renewable and green energy Neil Wem said: “The study builds upon Amec’s work in support of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association’s technical committees, and reflects our strategy to become the leading provider of consultancy, engineering and project management services to the UK’s energy infrastructure as it develops to meet our future energy demands.”
