Retail eyes on supermarket results

AN update from takeover target Sainsbury’s should provide an insight into the mood of the retail sector this week.

The UK’s third biggest supermarket chain will become the latest player in the sector to update on summer trading on Wednesday.

The company posted a 5% rise in like-for-like sales during the three months to June 16 - its 10th successive quarter of growth - but the figures came in below forecasts of 5.5%, and slipped from the 5.9% increase seen in the previous quarter.

Since then, Morrisons and Tesco have reported weaker figures for June and July as wet weather and tough comparatives with the World Cup last year affected results.

Other companies reporting this week include:

Tuesday: Finals: Clinton Cards, Debts.co.uk, Powerleague, Regent Inns

Interims: N Brown, Rugby Estates.

Wednesday: Interims: C&C.

Thursday: Finals: Air Partner, WH Smith.

Friday: Interims: Volex.
