New icon takes off with Darchem help
ANOTHER chapter of aviation history was written today as the world’s biggest passenger plane, the Airbus A380 superjumbo, completed its first commercial flight.
With 471 passengers on board, the giant Singapore Airlines’ aircraft touched down safely at Sydney airport having flown in from Singapore.
Stillington-based Darchem Engineering has provided insulation and exhaust systems for the wings of the new double-decker craft.
Deliveries of the A380, which is powered by Rolls-Royce engines, had been put back 18 months because of wiring problems.
But last week the first of the planes was delivered to Singapore Airlines.
Today’s launch comes almost four years to the day when the last Concorde commercial service flew. The A380 is set to take over from the retired supersonic aircraft as the iconic plane of the skies.
