Power plant in spotlight
PROPOSALS to upgrade Teesside Power Station will be the subject of two exhibitions next week.
The displays in Lazenby and Grangetown, will form part of the consultation process on a planning application to be submitted to Redcar and Cleveland Council by the end of the year.
As reported in the Evening Gazette last month, Teesside Power is looking at a number of options for the Wilton plant including an upgrade of the site and a possible sale.
Teesside Power staff will be on hand at the events to provide more information at the exhibitions, which will be held on Wednesday, November 14 at Lazenby Village Hall and on Thursday, November 15, at Grangetown Neighbourhood Centre.
Teesside Power chief executive David Lewis said: “Teesside Power Station will be 15 years old in April next year so we are taking the opportunity to review our strategic options for the future of the plant.
“The proposed upgrade programme would allow more efficient and flexible operation of the power station, which will be important in today’s energy market, which is quite different to that which existed when the plant was first commissioned in 1993.”
An upgrade would bring environmental benefits including the ability to produce the same amount of power using less natural gas and water, with reduced carbon dioxide emissions.
Although construction jobs would be created if the project went ahead, it is not expected to proceed for at least two years.
The plant used to be owned by bankrupt US energy giant Enron. It is now run by Stockton-based PX Group. Teesside Power is owned by private equity group Cargill and Goldman Sachs.
