Honour for Tees wood recyclers

THE UK’s first purpose-built biomass wood recycling facility, based at Wilton, has been awarded runner-up spot in a national recycling competition for its design and management.
UK Wood Recycling (UKWR), based next to the Wilton International Site at Redcar, was one of three finalists in the LetsRecycle.com awards for the Innovation in Design and Management of a recycling facility.
The company was opened earlier this year and will supply 80,000 tonnes a year of biomass fuel, made from recycled wood, to the new Wilton 10 biomass boiler - which was officially opened yesterday.
UKWR managing director Geoff Hadfield and site manager Gary Jones attended the award ceremony in London.
Mr Hadfield said: “We are delighted to have got this far in the competition.
“Building the facility from scratch enabled us to fully consider the impact on the environment, and to choose a site which lent itself to our purposes and had good transport links close by.”
The facility has been built on a 12 acre brownfield site using state-of-the-art technology. The site was chosen because it was a derelict industrial site close to the SembCorp Biomass Power Station.
