Eastern successes boost Siemens VAI

A TEESSIDE engineering firm is celebrating its second contract win in Asia in recent weeks.

Stockton-based Siemens VAI, which employs 175 on Teesside, has been commissioned to supply a plate mill to one of China’s leading steel producers.

The latest contract win follows a significant investment in the company from Tata Steel, which commissioned Siemens to build a new blast furnace in Kalinganagar in the state of Orissa, eastern India.

It is also the second plate mill to be supplied to Shagang Wide Plate Mill Co by Siemens, and will be a copy of the company’s existing 5.0m-wide plate mill, which went into operation in January 2007.

Shagang, which is based at Zhangjiagang near Shanghai, is part of the Jiangsu Shagang Group, which currently produces 16 million tonnes of steel every year.

The new mill stand from Siemens will have a rolling load capability of 10,000 tonnes and be able to produce 1.8 million tonnes of steel per year.

Siemens will design the new mill, supply key mechanical components and supervise the quality of Chinese-manufactured items of the equipment.

The company will also supply the motors and drives for the key process equipment, including the mill stand, plus automation for the complete mill line and supervise installation and commissioning.

Siemens VAI – which has sites at Christchurch, Dorset; Sheffield, South Yorkshire and Stockton – is part of Metals Technologies (MT), a

division of Siemens Group Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S).
