BT’s new North-East regional director is on a mission to make the region one of the most internet savvy in the UK.
Chris Sayers recently took over the position from Middlesbrough-born Ray Smith, who had the job for six years, and wants to significantly increase the 300,000 homes and businesses in the region that currently use BT’s broadband services.
Mr Sayers, who has lived in the region for 25 years, will also remain director of BT’s local government business unit, which is currently in the process of bidding for the rights to supply South Tyneside Council with a wide range of back-office support services.
“I am determined to use my position as regional director to help everybody in the region unlock these wonderful technological opportunities,” he said. BT employs around 4,500 staff in the region, with 320 at its North-East headquarters on the Quayside. Mr Sayers said that BT’s services help put around £200m a year into the regional economy.
Mr Sayers, who grew up in Surrey, first came to Newcastle to work for the British Ship Research Association, where he developed software applications for ship and propeller designs. He has also been a school governor for eight years and is involved in community youth work in the Walkergate area of Newcastle.
He said: “The North-East is home to me and my family, so I’m very passionate about the region. I came here for a two-week secondment 25 years ago and have never left. I’m excited about being able to take a leading role in helping to grow and develop the region through BT’s activities.”
