Battle against red-tape is welcomed

A TEES business leader has welcomed government efforts to cut red tape - but warns there is much more to do.

The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) claimed companies in the North-east were saving an estimated £20million a year following efforts to streamline form-filling.

The BERR report, Delivering Simplication Plans, outlines more than 250 government initiatives to tackle red tape in the last year.

John Wright, Tees Valley-based chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), said: “There seems to be a real effort now to get to terms with the vexed issue of over-regulation and we applaud all those who have been involved with it and will hopefully drive this programme forward.”

But he added that nobody should be complacent. “We need more start-ups on Teesside and I don’t want new businesses put off by too many regulations.”

Mr Wright pointed out that the US has regulatory exemptions for small businesses when they are starting out.
