Amec agrees £12.5m hire operation sale

ENGINEERING giant Amec has shed part of its Darlington-based operations in a £12.5m deal.

The company, which employs 1,000 people locally, has agreed to sell its tool and equipment business to Speedy Hire.

Based in Darlington, and part of Amec Logistics and Support Services, the business operates from 10 depots and employs about 250.

The disposal is the last in Amec’s programme to sell-off non-core businesses, first announced in 2006. The company has refocused away from construction in favour of project management in oil, gas and nuclear work. It is a major player in the green power industry.

Amec chief executive Samir Brikho said: “We have a strong purchaser, which wants to develop and invest in these operations.”
