Uni ranks in ‘CGI Ivy League’ top 20

TEESSIDE University has soared into the top 20 in a new, global animation league.

The prestigious international journal for 3D artists, 3D world magazine, placed the University of Teesside in joint fourth position for the UK and 18th in the world rankings in its Computer Generated Imaging Global Ivy League of animation schools.

The magazine compiled the rankings based on the schools’ profile in the 3D industry, using the number of students’ animations screened at six key festivals as a barometer

They included the University’s own Animex, the International Festival of Animation and Computer Games, which has been staged in Middlesbrough since 2000.

3D world describe their CGI Ivy League as ‘the most comprehensive and objective ranking of the world’s 3D training yet produced’.

Graham Dean, assistant dean for the university’s School of Computing, said: “3D World is such a well-respected journal in the animation community.

“Their external validation clearly shows the quality of our students’ work and the quality of our engagement with the animation industry through Animex.”

Animex, which takes place between February 4-8 this year, is a forum for professionals, students and people with an interest in computer games and animation to network and share their knowledge and skills.

Previous speakers at the festival include Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson; and Jason Schleifer, a member of the vast animation team behind the hugely successful Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Festival director Chris Williams, who lectures at Teesside University, said: “ It’s one of the top six events internationally for students and professionals to submit their work to.

“ There’s kudos if they can win one of our awards.”
