Howard joins Northern Racing as a director

FORMER Tory leader Michael Howard has become a director of the company behind Newcastle and Sedgefield racecourses.

A keen horse-racing fan, Mr Howard said that he is delighted to have a say in the running of Northern Racing, which runs nine courses and is owned by property tycoons the Reuben Brothers who bought it in 2007 for £90m.

Tony Kelly, Group Managing Director of Northern Racing, said: “I very much welcome Michael Howard’s appointment to our board as a non-executive director.

“As well as being most knowledgeable and enthusiastic about our sport, he brings a wealth of experience across the widest spectrum which will be invaluable to us.”

Mr Howard, who stands down from Parliament at the next election, said: “I am delighted to have this opportunity to contribute not only to a sport that I follow closely but also to the continued success of one of Britain’s largest and innovative racecourse groups.”
