Post Office workers fear for site’s future
POST Office workers at Middlesbrough’s mail centre hope to discover what the future holds for the site next week under regeneration plans for Cannon Park.
Unions have called for an “urgent decision” on the future of jobs at the depot, which includes processing, delivery and distribution.
Last year the centre, which employs more than 450 staff, lost the second class service to Newcastle and there are concerns that more jobs will go the same way.
With major redevelopment of Cannon Park now planned, workers fear for the future of the site.
Unions are calling for any new development to incorporate the mail centre.
A presentation is set to be made to unions next week by Royal Mail bosses.
Peter Hall, assistant branch secretary, said: “We don’t have a problem with moving, so long as the jobs are safe.
“We want to carry the three functions with us if we relocate.
“There’s a lot of people wandering around very despondent.
“The irony is, the centre has just been voted in the top 15 of most efficient centres by Royal Mail, so it would be bonkers to close the place - why close it if it’s so efficient?”
Mr Hall has called on support from local MPs, MEPs and Mayor of Middlesbrough, Ray Mallon.
